A hearty classic patty melt featuring perfectly toasted rye bread, melted cheese, caramelized onions, and a juicy beef patty, presented invitingly on a rustic surface.

  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 slices of rye bread
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 4 slices of cheddar cheese
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Pickles and lettuce for garnishing

Instructions

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 15 minutes.
  2. Form ground beef into four equal patties, season with salt and pepper.
  3. Cook beef patties in the skillet over medium-high heat for about 4 minutes per side until browned and cooked through.
  4. Lightly butter one side of each bread slice. Place two slices, buttered side down, on a skillet.
  5. Place a cheese slice on each bread, top with a beef patty, caramelized onions, and another cheese slice.
  6. Cover with remaining bread slices, buttered side up. Grill until golden brown and cheese melts, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  7. Serve hot with pickles and lettuce on the side.

Notes

  • Use thick-cut rye bread for best texture and flavor.
  • Ensure onions are well caramelized for sweetness.
