Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
- 3/4 cup buttermilk
- 2 tablespoons melted butter (for brushing)
- Optional: honey or jam for serving
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt until evenly combined.
- Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Pour in the buttermilk gradually, stirring gently until the dough just comes together. Do not overmix.
- Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead it a few times. Pat it into a 1-inch thick rectangle. Use a round biscuit cutter to cut out biscuits and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Brush the tops of the biscuits with melted butter and bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
- Once baked, brush the biscuits with additional melted butter for extra richness. Serve warm with honey, jam, or your favorite spread.
Notes
- Ensure the butter remains cold during mixing for flaky layers.
- Do not overmix the dough to keep the biscuits tender.
- Best enjoyed fresh but can be stored for later and reheated for a crispy texture.
- For dairy-free options, substitute the buttermilk with plant-based milk and use coconut oil or margarine.
