- 6 slices of bread (preferably day-old brioche or challah)
- 2 large apples, thinly sliced
- 3 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- For the streusel topping:
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking dish.
- Arrange bread slices in the dish, overlapping slightly.
- In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt.
- Pour the mixture evenly over the bread, making sure it soaks in.
- Spread sliced apples over the top evenly.
- Prepare streusel: mix flour and brown sugar, cut in cold butter until crumbly.
- Sprinkle streusel evenly over the casserole.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes until golden brown and cooked through.
- Serve warm with syrup or extra cinnamon apples if desired.
Notes
- For extra flavor, add a splash of bourbon or apple cider to the custard mixture.
- Use thick slices of bread for better absorption and texture.
- Can be prepared the night before and baked fresh in the morning for convenience.
